Running a small business is tough enough – keeping the books balanced, customers happy, and the coffee machine running. On top of all that, there’s now the whole “get noticed online” thing. It can feel overwhelming, but here’s the good news: you don’t need a massive budget or a marketing degree to make an impact. A few small, consistent steps can help really help your online presence.
Here are five practical (and easily implemetable) tips to get started.
1. Nail the Basics
Before you think about trying to go viral on TikTok or investing into marketing, you need to make sure your foundation is solid. That means:
- A clean, mobile-friendly website (even a simple one).
- An up-to-date and optimised Google Business Profile (hours, address, reviews).
Think of it like opening a shop on the high street – people need to be able to find you, know when you’re open, and trust that you’re legit.
2. Be Social, but Be Smart
You don’t need to be everywhere. Instead, figure out where your customers spend their time and focus there. For example:
- If you’re a café, Instagram and Facebook might be your sweet spot.
- If you’re in B2B, LinkedIn could be gold.
This is some advise I would give all small business owners, once you find out where your customers are handing out, double down on that platform. In the beginning you could try a few platforms, once one or two are doing better than the others, focus your time on those. Its much better to have 1 relativity successful platform bringing customers in than 5 bringing none in.
Extra tip: Followers are purely a vanity metric. Its much better to have 100 engaged and relevant followers than 10,000 people who followed you because you ran a competition.
3. Consistency Beats Perfection
Many small business owners get stuck waiting until everything is “just right.” The truth? People (and Google) value regular updates more than polished perfection.
- Post at least 1 good blog post a month.
- Share customer wins.
- Answer customer questions.
Done is better than perfect – and consistency builds trust.
4. Show the Human Side
Big brands can afford slick campaigns. Small businesses have something better: authenticity. Share the story behind your business, introduce your team, or show a bit of “behind the scenes.”
People connect with people – not faceless logos. A little personality goes a long way. Think of the last time you were choosing between two equal products or services, what made you choose the one you did?
5. Track What’s Working
You don’t necessarily need complicated dashboards, but it helps to know if your efforts are paying off.
- Check your website traffic (Google Analytics or even your hosting dashboard).
- Look at which social posts get the most likes, shares, or comments.
- Pay attention to what customers mention when they contact you.
If you know what’s working, you can do more of it. Additionally, you can understand whats not working, and then stop doing it.
Takeaway
Although it can seem daunting, building an online presence is just about consistency. Don’t fall into the #1 pitfall of just not starting because you feel your not there yet, you will figure it out along the way. Start today.
